High cheekbones are one of the most desirable facial characteristics for both women and men. If you don’t have movie star cheekbones, you’re not alone. People looking for how to get high or defined cheekbones spend millions on products, treatments, and surgery every year.
With the exception of surgical implants, most of these fail to deliver real results. The only nonsurgical option that can add lasting definition and shape is cheek filler. Here we explain what causes flat, low, or undefined cheekbones, and break down your treatment options.
Cheek Fillers Before and After
At MFI in San Francisco, our cheek filler patients are some of the happiest and most transformed, and the results speak for themselves.
The Issue | The MFI Solution |
---|---|
Low/undefined cheekbones | Cheek Fillers |
Flat cheeks | Cheek Fillers; Midface Rejuvenation |
Bottom-heavy cheeks | BOTOX® for Masseter & Jaw |
Cheek Filler Alternatives
If you’re looking for a way to get rid of forehead lines and wrinkles without surgery, or wondering “How Do you have soft facial contours or a “baby face?” If you’ve scoured the internet to find out how to add definition and fullness to your cheeks, you’ve probably come across some of these “solutions”:
- Surgical implants
- “Plumping” creams/serums
- Face exercises
- At-home devices/gadgets
- Pinching your cheeks
- Highlight/contour makeup
Some of these might make your cheeks seem momentarily fuller by increasing blood flow to the area. Others might create the illusion of volume or shape from certain angles. Surgical implants do provide a permanent solution, but that’s an expensive, invasive option that’s only reversible with another surgery. Understanding why your cheeks look the way they do should help you understand why dermal fillers for cheeks are the best option.
What Causes Undefined Cheekbones?
People of all genders often have a wish list for their cheekbones that might include descriptors like:
- High
- Defined
- Chiseled
- Contoured
- Angular
- Prominent
If your cheekbones aren’t meeting your expectations in the above categories—and they’ve always been that way—then you can probably blame genetics. The prominence of your cheekbones is a factor of the ratio of your zygomatic bone and the surrounding soft tissue (cheek skin and fat). Nothing you apply to your cheeks from the outside can change that. The same is true for face exercises.
What Causes Flat Cheeks?
Flat cheeks are also typically the result of genetics. Whether they’re high or low, your cheeks can have a flat contour due to your bone structure. However, flat cheeks can be the result of age-related volume loss caused by fat breakdown and bone resorption. If you have flattened, sagging cheeks, volume loss may be the culprit.
Are Bottom-Heavy Cheeks the Issue?
If the most prominent part of your cheek is the area beneath the cheekbone, your cheeks will appear bottom heavy. This can create the look of a “baby face,” or “chipmunk cheeks.” Bottom-heavy faces are caused by underdeveloped cheekbones and/or overdeveloped masseter muscles or parotid glands. These may be treated with filler to the cheekbones, BOTOX to the masseter muscle, or a combination of both.

Cheek Filler: A Customizable, Nonsurgical Solution
You may have figured out by now that creating or restoring the cheek contours you want requires adding shape beneath the skin. The highly trained Injectors at MFI specialize in using cheek filler and neuromodulators to lift and shape flat cheeks and bring prominence and angularity to undefined cheekbones. Here’s how:
Enhance Structure and Shape
Today’s fillers are truly remarkable, and products like JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™ and Restylane® Lyft are made specifically to enhance the cheeks. They feature a thicker formula of hyaluronic acid, which makes them more durable and appropriate for adding structure to the cheekbones.
Restore Lost Volume to Sagging Cheeks
If your cheeks have flattened, drooped, or become hollow over time, fillers can be used to re-create your more youthful cheek fullness. We often do this as part of our Midface Rejuvenation procedure, which restores the areas adjacent to the cheekbones, including nasolabial folds and under-eye bags and circles.
Slim Bottom Heavy Cheeks With BOTOX
If fullness in your lower face is detracting from your cheekbones, it may be due to enlarged chewing muscles. We treat this with our BOTOX® for Masseter & Jaw package—either on its own or in addition to cheek filler—to slim the lower face and make the cheekbones appear more prominent.
