You may have seen the viral TikToks raving about “Barbie BOTOX” or “trap BOTOX” for a slimmer, more elongated neck contour. And while it’s not as common as other applications of neuromodulators, it’s definitely trending. That’s because some people with overdeveloped trapezius muscles don’t like the bulk it adds to their neck and shoulders, not to mention the discomfort that often comes with it. Trapezius BOTOX at Mabrie Facial Institute in San Francisco can help you look and feel better by disabling and shrinking these muscles.

How Do You Shrink Bulky Neck Muscles? Your Treatment Options at MFI

BOTOX in the Trapezius Muscle

If you’d like a sleeker, elongated neck and a more angular transition between your neck and shoulders, trap BOTOX might be a good option for you. Our expert Injectors carefully inject a neuromodulator into the upper trapezius, using extreme precision so that other nearby muscles aren’t affected. Within a week or so, you’ll feel less tension in your neck and shoulders, and after about a month, you should see visible improvements.

What Causes Bulk at the Base of the Neck?

Overactive Muscles

The trapezius muscle is a large muscle that fans out along the back of the neck and shoulder. When the muscle is overused, either from tension or hunching over a keyboard or smartphone, it can get bulky. This creates a sloped transition from the neck to the shoulders, rather than a slender, defined angle.

Consultation & Planning

Your First Visit

When you come to our beautiful San Francisco office for a consultation, you’ll meet right away with one of our talented and skilled Injectors. After a candid conversation to discuss your aesthetic goals and expectations, we take professional-level photographs of your neck and shoulders from a variety of angles. Using both the photos and our in-person evaluation, we develop a customized treatment plan for you.

Please plan to spend up to 90 minutes in the office for your first visit, which includes consultation, prep, treatment, pre- and post-treatment photography, aftercare education, and scheduling your next appointment.

Your Trap BOTOX Procedure

If we agree that a neuromodulator like BOTOX will help improve the contour of your neck and shoulders, we will typically proceed with treatment right away. We’ll cleanse the area to prevent infection, then mark the injection points.

The skilled Injectors at MFI use a tiny needle to carefully inject BOTOX or Dysport® into the most tense areas of the upper trapezius muscle. You’ll likely have several rows of injections with up to 5 injections per row. The neuromodulator blocks nerve signals to the muscle, and once it relaxes (in about 5 to 7 days), you might feel relief from any tension or pain in the neck, shoulder, and upper back caused by your tight traps.

Your Neck & Shoulders May Look Better After Two Treatments

Trap BOTOX treatment results are gradual and can take up to 30 days to be noticeable. At that point, we can evaluate your progress and see if you need additional injections to achieve your goals. Results typically last about 6 months and vary between individuals. We recommend retreatment every 6 months to maintain your results.

Preparing for Your Procedure

For the best experience, follow these tips in advance of your appointment:

  • A few days before your appointment, restrict blood thinners, such as anti-inflammatories, fish oil, and alcohol. Limiting these will reduce your risk of bruising from trap BOTOX.
  • DO NOT discontinue prescribed, medically necessary medications.
  • Eat and drink a normal breakfast or lunch prior to your appointment; low blood sugar can make patients lightheaded during treatment.

Recovery & Aftercare

Immediately after your BOTOX treatment, you may experience swelling, bruising, and tenderness. These are normal side effects and are most apparent 24 to 48 hours after treatment. They can last up to 2 weeks but typically subside within 2 to 5 days.  Most patients return to their routine activities the same day.

Swelling

  • What little swelling you experience should subside in a day or two

Bruising

  • If you experience bruising, it should dissipate within a week.

Redness & Discomfort

  • Often minimal and lasting just a few days
  • Your trap area may be tender to the touch

Downtime

  • No downtime required
  • May return to work immediately after treatment
  • May resume normal exercise the next day

Because we know you have questions about your recovery process, we created an entire page dedicated to BOTOX and dermal filler aftercare.
