Some people have a prominent chin dimple or cleft that’s an inherited genetic trait. But you can also have a different type of chin dimples that make your skin look lumpy and bumpy—like an orange peel. That’s because the mentalis (Latin for chin) muscle works overtime in some people. When this muscle, which lifts and protrudes the lower lip (think pouting), is hyperactive, the tension causes a rippled, dimpled appearance. It can even cause retraction and distortion of your chin shape.

If you’re looking for a smooth and shapely chin, look no further than the skilled Injectors at Mabrie Facial Institute in San Francisco. Our BOTOX experts carefully inject the muscle, using extreme precision so that your smile is not affected. Within a few days, you’ll see a new chin in the mirror that blends seamlessly with your other beautiful features.

How Do You Smooth a Bumpy, Dimpled, or Orange Peel Chin? Your Treatment Options at MFI

BOTOX in the Chin (Mentalis BOTOX)

If a hyperactive mentalis muscle is causing your dimpled chin, we can inject it with BOTOX or another neuromodulator. This disables the muscle, releasing the tension in the skin for a smooth appearance. This can also increase chin projection for people with a small, recessed, or weak chin. You need a very experienced Injector for mentalis injections because your smile can be affected if the neuromodulator is placed incorrectly.

Why Does My Chin Look Bumpy?

Overactive Muscles

The mentalis (Latin for chin) muscle is responsible for elevating the skin on your chin and acts like a “chin strap.” When the muscle is too strong or tight it can decrease chin projection. Because the mentalis muscle attaches to the skin, it can also cause an “orange peel” or dimpled appearance of the chin skin. Both of these concerns are addressed with chin BOTOX.

Consultation and Planning for Your Chin Dimpling Treatment

Your First Visit

Your chin smoothing journey begins with a consultation. You’ll meet with one of our Injectors at our bright, beautiful San Francisco office. After an in-depth conversation to discuss your aesthetic goals and expectations, we take professional-level photographs of your chin from all angles. Using both the photos and the in-person evaluation, we map out a customized treatment plan for you.

Please plan to spend up to 90 minutes in the office for your first visit, which includes consultation, prep, treatment, pre- and post-treatment photography, aftercare education, and scheduling your next appointment.

Your Chin Enhancement Procedure

If we agree that a neuromodulator is the best solution for your chin, we will typically proceed with treatment right away. You’ll wash your face with an antiseptic cleanser to prevent infection, then we mark the injection sites.

The skilled Injectors at MFI use a tiny needle to carefully inject BOTOX, Dysport®, or XEOMIN® into the mentalis muscle. The neuromodulator blocks nerve signals to the muscle, and once it relaxes (in about 5 to 7 days), the skin smooths, and the dimples fade.

For more about what to expect, visit Your Treatment Timeline.

Preparing for Your Procedure

For the best experience, follow these tips in advance of your appointment:

  • A few days before your appointment, restrict blood thinners, such as anti-inflammatories, fish oil, and alcohol. Limiting these will reduce your risk of bruising from chin injections.
  • DO NOT discontinue prescribed, medically necessary medications.
  • Eat and drink a normal breakfast or lunch prior to your appointment; low blood sugar can make patients lightheaded during treatment.

Recovery and Aftercare

Immediately after your chin BOTOX treatment, you may experience swelling, redness, and tenderness or irritation. These are normal side effects and are most apparent 24 to 48 hours after treatment. They typically subside within 1 to 5 days.  Most patients return to their routine activities the same day.

Swelling

  • Swelling is usually limited to the injection points and is typically minor
  • This minor swelling should resolve within 48 hours

Bruising

  • Bruising is normal but fairly uncommon with neuromodulator injections

Redness and Discomfort

  • Often minimal and lasting just a day or two
  • Injection sites may be tender to the touch

Downtime

  • No downtime required
  • May return to work immediately after treatment
  • May resume normal exercise the next day

Because we know you have questions about your recovery process, we created an entire page dedicated to BOTOX and dermal filler aftercare.

Chin BOTOX FAQs

How many units of BOTOX are used in the chin?

Although individual needs vary, BOTOX for chin dimpling usually uses between 5 and 10 units of BOTOX. It is common for women and men to get chin BOTOX at the same time they are getting BOTOX for other concerns, such as crow’s feet, frown lines, or jawline slimming.

Is BOTOX in the chin safe?

BOTOX has been proven to be safe and has been approved for cosmetic use for more than 20 years. To ensure you don’t experience complications, such as incorrectly placed BOTOX that can affect your smile, you should seek a highly trained Injector with extensive experience with this particular area.

How long does chin BOTOX last?

Individuals with hyperactive mentalis muscles experience involuntary dimpling due to constant muscle contractions. BOTOX temporarily paralyzes these muscles, preventing dimpling for about three months. Often, after the paralysis wears off, patients notice a decrease in habitual dimpling, resulting in fewer dimples at rest.
