ABOUT OUR PATIENT

Isn't it funny how the tiniest detail can make or break the way your lips look? Our patient for this case, a 25 year old woman living in the Bay Area, noticed something off about hers that she really wanted to fix. In fact, she actually had non-surgical treatment a few months before she found my services on Yelp.

"I don't see the volume I'd like" she told me during a consultation in my San Francisco office. In fact, she wanted her lips to be at least 25%-50% fuller than they were after her previous procedure. If she already had tried out dermal fillers to augment her lips, where could she go from here to get the results she wanted?

MFI TREATMENT PLAN

Despite having a previous experience with non-surgical chin augmentation, this patient wasn't fully aware of the different types of dermal fillers yet. So, we discussed the advantages and disadvantages of differnet fillers like Restylane, Juvederm, and Juvederm Voluma.

Do you know the differences between the three? If not, let's take a minute to talk about them.

First of all, Restylane has a gel like consistency. This is great, because it stays exactly where you place it. Very reliable.

Juvederm, on the other hand, is more of a gooey substance. This is ideal for filling out the lips and adding more volume. (It lasts a little bit longer, too.)

Juvederm Voluma, which is different than just plain Juvederm, is much thicker. Because of this, it has to be placed deeper in the lip. Even though it's puffier, it lasts the longest out of the bunch.

After illustrating the differences of these three dermal fillers to this patient, she made the decision to go with Restylane because of its viscosity.

I think this was a good decision, because upon examining her lips, I could tell she didn't really need a lot to make the changes she wanted. Her lips already had a great ratio, but her upper lip was the one that was causing the slight disharmony because it was asymmetric. I pointed out a slight indentation on it causing that effect. Immediately, she said, "yes, that's exactly it!"

THE OUTCOME

It only took us two treatments over the course of a week or so to successfully augment this patient's lips. We asked her how she was feeling about going with Restylane for her treatment. She said she was happy with it. And you know what? I'm happy that she's happy!
