Everywhere you turn—YouTube, Instagram, your local makeup counter—it seems you’ll find tutorials and products made for contouring. The popularity of contouring makeup and contouring how-to’s reflects people’s interest in trying to create the illusion of balanced angles, proportions, and features. But what if you could enhance the contours of your face without makeup and without surgery, with long-lasting results? At MFI in San Francisco, we can create this ideal appearance using injectable fillers and neuromodulators like BOTOX® and Dysport®.
A makeup artist uses light and dark shading to create the illusion of a face with ideal proportions. We go beyond illusion by using fillers and neuromodulators to actually slim, sculpt, and contour the face.
What’s Your Face Shape?
The shape of your face determines which contouring treatments will accentuate your features, as well as how your face will age over time. Most beauty experts believe facial shape can be divided into four general categories, but here at MFI we’ve added one more:
Choose Your Shape Below:
Round
Round-shaped faces are roughly equal in length and width, which can create the appearance of a “baby face.”
Contouring the Round Face With Fillers: At MFI, we use fillers to illuminate the center of the face while augmenting the cheekbones for enhanced midface contours. Refining the nose and chin can also help create a more elongated facial appearance.
Rejuvenating the Round Face With Fillers: As the round face ages, it may become more square or pear-shaped as volume shifts to the jaw and neck. Fat loss and descent can also produce under-eye hollows. Our team restores the cheek and under-eye areas by adding structure to the midface with fillers.
Square
If your face is square, you'll see there's a straight vertical line from the cheekbone to the angle of the jaw. This could be a sign that your jaw muscles are enlarged and may be treated with Botox, filler, or possibly in combination to lengthen the chin.
Contouring the Square Face With Fillers: This is considered an attractive face shape for men, but women with this face shape often want to soften the jawline and add prominence to their cheekbones with fillers. For certain individuals who want to reduce the prominence of the jaw, BOTOX® can be injected into the masseter muscle, which produces a slimming effect.
Rejuvenating the Square Face With Fillers: Aging can cause the square face to become more rectangular or even pear-shaped as the tissues descend. Dr. Mabrie can add volume and lift to the cheeks and midface—which improves and de-emphasizes jowls—with products like JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC®. Refining the chin with fillers can also help reduce signs of aging in the square face.
Oval
Oval-shaped faces are generally one-and-a-half times longer than they are wide.
Contouring the Oval Face With Fillers: At MFI, we often focus on emphasizing the center of the oval face for optimal balance. We may add dimension to the cheeks, improve the contour of the nose, or correct under-eye circles.
Rejuvenating the Oval Face With Fillers: With age, the oval face can become square or even triangular as the skin and fat from the midface descend and accumulate in the lower face. For these individuals, We often focus on restoring volume to the temples, cheeks, and midface with fillers. We may also add definition to the chin and jawline.
Heart
A heart-shaped face is wide at the cheekbones and narrow at the chin. In general, the heart shape is the preferred feminine shape and a softer version of an athletic-shaped face.
Contouring the Heart-Shaped Face With Fillers: People with this face shape can typically benefit from treatments that help bring more prominence to the lower face and balance out the width of the forehead. We may perform subtle lip and jawline enhancement or use fillers to soften a very pointed or prominent chin.
Rejuvenating the Heart-Shaped Face With Fillers: As it ages, the heart-shaped face can be prone to noticeable forehead wrinkles or drooping brows, which we can correct with BOTOX or Dysport. As fullness in the cheeks and midface diminish, filler injections can restore shape and give a subtle lift, as well as smooth out nasolabial folds, under-eye circles, and marionette lines.
Athletic
We actually include a 5th facial shape for treating patients. We call this the Athletic Shape. This really blends the heart shape with a square chin, creating a chiseled appearance such as Serena Williams or David Beckham. Angular cheekbones, a defined jawline, and strong chin are the hallmarks of this face shape. Age-related volume loss can create a hollowed-out appearance that strategically placed fillers can correct.
Contouring the Male Athletic Face With Fillers: Many male contouring patients are seeking to achieve or enhance the male athletic face shape. Our team uses fillers to bring out the cheekbones, create a strong chin, and add definition to the jawline.
Rejuvenating the Male Athletic Face With Fillers: With age, the clean lines of this face shape can soften and sag, with lax tissue collecting around the jaw and neck. Cheeks lose volume and develop either a flattened or a gaunt, hollowed look. Our Injectors use injectables to subtly lift and define the cheeks and restore the angularity of the jawline. Fillers in the midface at the junction of the cheek and under-eye area can reduce the appearance of shadows and bags and restore prominence to the cheekbones.
