Are you intrigued by the idea of fuller lips but nervous about pulling the trigger on lip injections? Perhaps you’re wondering, Do lip fillers hurt? And if so, exactly how much pain must you endure to upgrade your lips?
Truthfully, lip fillers are historically one of the more painful treatment areas. However with new numbing and injecting techniques, we’ve been able to minimize the discomfort. In this post, we’ll familiarize you with the advances we utilize today to prioritize your safety, comfort, and relaxation during lip filler treatment. So, if you’re thirsty for more luscious lips, don’t let pain deter you from achieving your dream look!
How Bad Do Lip Fillers Hurt (Really)?
As we tackle this topic, it’s helpful to keep in mind that pain perception is highly subjective and varies from patient to patient. What may be uncomfortable to you might be entirely tolerable for the next patient who walks through our doors. These factors can influence your comfort level during lip filler treatment:
- Your pain tolerance level
- Your anxiety level
- Your trust in your Injector
- The Injector’s technique
- Anesthetics administered before and during treatment
That said, our Mabrie Facial Institute (MFI) lip filler patients generally do not describe their treatment as painful. Our team goes to such great lengths to prioritize your comfort that many patients only experience a quick pinching sensation vs. pain during their lip injections. In other words, it’s really not so bad!
We promise that’s not just lip service. Listen to what one of our lip filler patients has to say about their recent treatment experience:
How We Maximize Your Comfort During Lip Filler Injections
Our expert Injectors are medical professionals who love what they do and are passionate about providing you with the best experience (and results!) possible. This includes delivering what we deem “high-end comfort.” We make sure you’re aware that we can take breaks, go slow, or do whatever is necessary so that you feel at ease throughout your procedure.
In addition to setting a calming vibe, we pride ourselves on leveraging the latest aesthetic tools and resources designed to minimize your discomfort. Here are some ways we strive to make your lip filler treatment painless:
- Topical numbing cream: Lidocaine cream is easy to administer, takes effect quickly, and lasts for the duration of your treatment. Many of the dermal fillers we use are also pre-mixed with lidocaine for added comfort.
- Dental blocks: We may opt to numb sensitive nerve areas to minimize your discomfort.
- Applied vibration/vibrating tool: Facial vibrating tools designed especially for injectable treatments help provide a distraction and reduce the perception of pain.
- Nitronox™: We administer a 50/50 mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a handheld device that you control throughout your treatment to keep anxiety or pain at bay.
- Controlled Injections: We strategically control the pace and technique of your injections to minimize any mental or physical discomfort. In fact, a slow and controlled approach can allow fillers to integrate more smoothly, and we often use the same needle size for injecting lip filler as we do with BOTOX.
Do Lip Fillers Hurt More Than BOTOX?
Maybe you’ve heard that BOTOX® Cosmetic is a walk in the park compared to lip injections. We’d say that’s a bit dramatic. But what about the amount of lip filler vs BOTOX pain? It’s true that, generally, lip filler injections cause more discomfort than BOTOX injections. That’s because BOTOX injections are extremely quick, and the product’s consistency allows for an extremely fine needle.
Alternatively, dermal fillers have additional volume and thickness and may require larger needles. We’re excited by the fact that improved needles and anesthetic medications designed to prioritize comfort are continually being brought to market. And, when it comes down to it, even though getting lip fillers may be slightly more uncomfortable than a BOTOX lip flip, neither treatment is particularly painful.
Here at MFI, many of our patients considering lip filler have already received BOTOX. We surveyed a handful of these patients and found that those who utilize our numbing techniques felt that lip fillers actually hurt less than or equal to BOTOX for the upper face.

Are Lip Fillers Painful After Treatment?
It’s common to experience some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort after lip injections. However, these side effects typically dissipate within 2 weeks. We advise our patients to use over-the-counter pain medications, cold compresses, and homeopathic options such as Arnica montana to reduce any discomfort. What isn’t normal after lip injections? Any increasing throbbing pain and numbness—call us right away if these symptoms persist.
Parting Thoughts: Beauty Doesn’t Have To Hurt
Fear of pain shouldn’t deter anyone from getting plumper, fuller lips—especially not with the advanced aesthetic tools and techniques available today. Our patients will tell you that the results are worth the small discomfort of the procedure.
Let’s recap the key points we’ve covered about perfecting your pout with lip injections at MFI:
- It’s absolutely essential to trust your lips to an experienced Injector and communicate openly during each stage of treatment.
- Pain is a perception that varies from patient to patient, but we do everything possible to put you at ease.
- In addition to prioritizing your physical comfort and safety, we ensure you’re emotionally comfortable and mentally prepared for your procedure.
- We use topical numbing creams, nitrous oxide, and other anesthetic options to reduce your anxiety and discomfort.
- Many patients report minimal to no pain during lip fillers, but some swelling is expected for approximately 2 weeks post-treatment.
- Compared to BOTOX, most patients find that lip fillers are less than or equal to the amount of discomfort caused.
